Audit Partner, Professional Standards Partner – Salt Lake City
Client service role: concurring partner and local professional standards partner
Tom is an audit partner and the professional standards partner for the Salt Lake City office. In this role, he is ultimately responsible locally for ensuring the quality of our audit services for clients served out of the Salt Lake City office. Additionally, Tom has particular expertise serving clients in areas related to Sarbanes-Oxley, corporate goverance and internal control, risk management and assessment, audit committee advisory, regulatory compliance, process improvement and re-engineering, policy and procedure enhancement and information technology – security, control and assurance.
Experience
Tom serves clients in various industry groups. He joined Grant Thornton initially in December of 1993, then later served as the CFO of a public company from 2000-2003 and as a partner at Gregory & Eldredge from 2003-2005. Tom returned to Grant Thornton in 2005. Since that time, Tom has led his teams in successfully delivering process and control services locally and globally. Tom is a frequent writer and reviewer for control and audit related matters in college textbooks and for questions in the Uniform CPA Examination. He is also a frequent speaker on such topics to the Institute of Managerial Accountants, the Institute of Internal Auditors, the National Association of Corporate Directors, and to various audit committes and boards of directors throughout the region.
Tom is currently on staff as an assistant professor at the University of Utah, David Eccles School of Business. He formulates and executes curriculum relating to business process and control, financial statement audit, information technology audit and financial statement fraud.
Professional qualifications and memberships
Tom is a Certified Public Accountant and is member of various professional organizations, including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Institute of Internal Auditors, the Information Systems Audit and Control Association, and the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants.
Education
Tom earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and a Master of Professional Accounting – Audit Emphasis from the University of Utah.
